With this presentation we would like to offer you the opportunity to present preliminary results of understanding of clouds, precipitation and aerosols over the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic. Our invited speaker will present his latest findings and projects, followed by stimulating discussions.

Titel: Linking surface-based observations to improving climate and forecast models in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean region

Lecturer: Dr. Simon Alexander
Australien Arctic Division

Recent Australian-led field campaigns in East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean have provided a wealth of cloud, precipitation and aerosol data which we are using to understand the unique microphysical processes in this region. These campaigns took place to help address the persistent large uncertainties in surface radiation in climate models over this region. The data collected are invaluable for the evaluation and improvement of a range of forecast and climate models. In this talk, I will discuss some recent research highlights and focus on linking our observations directly to model evaluation and improvement. I shall also describe future field campaigns and the science questions we will seek to answer.
