Mathematics Preparation Course

In the upcoming winter semester, a Mathematics Preparation Course for all new students in the subjects Physics, Teaching Degree Programmes in Physics, IPSP and Meteorology is organised at our faculty. Essential mathematical content is repeated and refreshed during this course. Participation in the Mathematics Preparation Course is voluntary and will not be graded. The contents of the Mathematics Preparation Course include:

• functions
• differentiation and integration of functions of one variable
• vectors

Structure of the Courses of Study

Modules are the main units in the structure of bachelor's and master's degree programmes. Courses such as lectures, seminars or exercises are combined into thematically related blocks/units and thus form modules. Modules are concluded with a module examination. Each module examination contributes to the final grade of your degree. 

Credit points (LP, CP or ECTS) describe the estimated workload for a module. In contrast, grades provide information on the quality of your achievement. One CP represents a workload of 30 hours (tutorial and private study hours). According to the regular course plan standard 30 CP per semester are to be achieved. In a three-year bachelor's programme, for example a total of 180 CP (5400 working hours) must be completed. This corresponds to an assumed average weekly working time of about 40 hours (with seven weeks of vacation per year).

The main types of modules include:

• Compulsory Modules: A compulsory module must be completed.
• Compulsory Elective Modules: One or more modules must be selected from a list of modules.
• Free Elective Modules: Modules from other subject areas can be selected as specified in the examination regulations of your course of study.

The study documents form the basis of every course of study and contain all important information needed for planning and organising the studies. The examination regulations (PO) contain all the specifications for the examinations of a degree programme, including examination structure, examination requirements, deadlines, grading details, examination retakes and much more. The study regulations (SO), on the other hand, contain the legally binding definition of the admission requirements, the duration and volume of studies, the goal of the programme, as well as its structure and content. The annex to the study regulations also contains a study plan and the module descriptions. In case of specific questions, these documents provide legally binding information. Module Registration

Please note that you must enroll in the modules and also in the associated courses within the registration period. The registration is done via AlmaWeb or TOOL, in special cases via an email to our study office. With the module registration you automatically register for the module exam(s) too. Please note that you will not be allowed to take an exam without a valid registration. 

AlmaWeb is the study portal at Leipzig University – the campus management system. There you can view and download study certificates, view the course catalogue and exam registrations, or deregister from modules.

TOOL is used by some faculties as an online registration system. The extended range of functions allows, for example the automated control of the module registration of students from different faculties. After the end of the registration period, the registrations are transferred to AlmaWeb.

There are also Moodle courses for many modules. Moodle is a learning platform that gives students and instructors the option of cooperative learning (for example: providing or communicating supplementary course material, deadlines, homeworks). Please note: By registering for a Moodle course, you neither acquire a registration for the examination, nor do you acquire a seat in the lectures of this module. Details for Moodle courses will be provided by the instructors.

Building Your Timetable

On the information page of your course of study, you will find overviews of its structure. There you can see in which order and in which semester the modules are recommended to be taken. This is not a binding regulation – however, the recommendation does take into account consecutive content and prerequisites on completed modules.

Overviews of the courses offered in your course of study in the respective semester can be found in AlmaWeb and in our course catalogue. Our institutes offering courses of studies in the fields of Meteorology and Geography often provide further information in the study section on the respective webpages: Leipizg Institute for Meteorology (LIM), Institute for Geography (IFG).

Please note that some courses may be taught in divided groups. While lectures are usually offered to all students together, in case of group splitting you can choose your seminar or exercise group (group A, B, 1, 2 ...) during registration. In individual modules, courses on different topics are offered for selection. You can find further information in our course catalogue.

Questions and Contact

There are a number of different contacts for questions and matter concerning your studies. If you contact us by email, please use your university email address (enquiries from private addresses cannot be processed for data privacy reasons) and state your course of study and matriculation number. To use the student email address, you must first activate your university login. You will receive details on this during enrolment.

 

For general and interdisciplinary topics, please refer to the central guidance advisory services with the Student Service Centre (SSZ) as the central service facility:

• Central Student Advisory Service: provides general, interdisciplinary information and advice and answers basic questions about application modalities.
• Central Student Office: is the contact point for all administrative matters (enrolment, exmatriculation, re-enrollment, UniCard, etc.)
• International Centre: supports (among other things) foreign students. 
• Leipzig Student Services: is a non-profit organisation under public law and provides information on topics such as housing, BAföG, studying with children, studying with disabilities.
