Our centre builds on the great tradition of connecting physics and mathematics in Leipzig. This is associated with names such as Werner Heisenberg, Felix Klein, Felix Bloch, Sophus Lie, Peter Debye and Bartel van der Waerden. Our centre supports the connection between theoretical physics and mathematics at our university and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences and related disciplines in Leipzig. Furthermore, it serves to expand the networking between these scientific areas and their effective public external presentation.

Focus

Our centre connects working groups at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Mathematical Institute and Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences. It promotes and coordinates cross-faculty activities in the field of teaching mathematics, physics and related scientific disciplines.

An important aspect is the interdisciplinary funding of doctoral candidates and young scientists in combination with other funding instruments. These include graduate schools, the Graduate Academy Leipzig and the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS). With the newly created master's course of study in Mathematical Physics, our centre provides a focused link between research and teaching at our university.
